Bald Eagle Missing Lower Jaw (Mandible / Beak) & Black Necrotic Feet

This adult bald eagle flew into a tree and we were so excited as it had been months since we’ve seen one. Upon focusing in, we saw that it is missing it’s lower beak / mandible / jaw. We then noticed extremely black feet which is not good because raptors need healthy talons and feet to catch prey. Black feet is indicative of necrotic dying tissue and eventual loss of use.

The Bald eagle flew in and out strong (stayed 6 minutes) and a laughing gull was harassing him as he flew into the tree. S/he did poop before taking out which means it is capable of eating with it’s missing jaw.

We’re capture and transport volunteers with the Avian Medical Clinic at Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC and will certainly keep our eyes out if this eagle comes back and is grounded. Unfortunately, a flying bird can not be caught…. Charleston SC July 2025
